The Port of Marseilles-Fos :

First port of France and Mediterranean with an annual traffic of 92.5 million tons, the Port of Marseilles is composed of 2 basins:

• The Eastern basins, in Marseille, especially devoted to the passenger traffic (cruisings and Ferries) and to the goods traffic for the North-South axis, particulary for all countries bordering the Mediterranean.
The Eastern basins have combine rail-road facilities (the station of Canet) which makes port an exceptional tri-modal tool. They also have cooled warehouses for the transit of fresh fruits and vegetables.

• The Western basins located in Fos-sur-Mer are rather devoted to the intercontinental traffic (particularly for the Far East and North America ). The container terminal is served by the rail and roads, and lays out, at less than one kilometer, but out of the harbour zone, of the Fps-Distriport logistics platform (400 acres dedicated to warehouses serving the sea traffic for import or export).

The basins of Fos also include oil or mineral and RoRo terminals. Moreover these basins form an integral part of the industrial park of Fos on which are located many factories (Steel factories of Sollac, Ascométal, and Lyondell ...).

The port of Marseilles Authority will build a second terminal in Fos in order to double the port container capacity ( from 700.000 to 1.500.000 containers per year) in 2005.

• Second airport in France for freight : 38,418 tons in 2000, open 24h/24.

Extending on more than 1 500 acres, the airport has 3 rail stations for freight and 5 platforms for express freight operated by Chronopost, DHL, Jet Service, TAT Express and TNT

Aerofrigo, an ultramodern cold warehouse, in conformity with European standards and approved like a frontier post for inspection, allows to receive all type of perishable foodstuffs.

Elected in September 1999 better cargo airport of Southern Europe, 2nd French airport for freight, Marseilles-Provence opened 24 hours a day, benefits from an ideal climate and very competitive exploitation costs.

Marseilles is linked to all Europe between the Arc Rôhdanien and the Arc Méditerranéen.

Transport in Provence benefits from modern and powerful infrastructures thanks to a dense but uncluttered network of motorways and 4 lanes roads.

In all, there are nearly 510 km of motorways and expressways for a territory of a 5500 km2 surface.

This network makes it possible to serve all the industrial and logistics areas between them and with the remainder of France and Europe.
None of these areas is at more than fifteen minutes (and generally less than 5 minutes) of a motorway.

There are 15 rail stations for the local, national and international traffic. The Region counts 166 rail connected final installations, to which 131 companies are connected.

The marshalling yard of Miramas constitutes real the turntable of the regional network: 1 330 cailcars are treated there each day. It is the 2nd marshalling yard in France, with 14 million tons of freight per year.

The regional rail network benefits from interconnections with the European networks: Spain, Italy, Germany, England and so on. Daily dedicated shuttles leave to all France and to Europe, from the harbors of Marseilles and Fos.

The new logistics platforms are connected to the rail networks.

Since June 2000 the TGV MEDITERRANEE, the new high speed rail line, serves Provence for passenger transport, it links Marseilles-Paris in 3h00, and Marseilles-Lyon in 1h40.

There are two major ports in terms of river transportation :

• Port Tellines :
Created in 1975 to receive ro-ro traffic and heavy bulks, the Tellines hub is in the Port- Saint- Louis area.
In the early eighties, vehicular traffic moved to the Brule Tabac quay. This freeing of space allowed the PMA to develop a hub with the great river Rhone. Since 1995, there has been significant activity in peat and cereals traffic; container is now growing strongly.
Moreover, The Fos part of the Port Autonome of Marseille is built on and very close to the Rhone river.

• Arles river-sea port :
Arles is a major river port on the Saône-Rhône axis. It comprises can be connected to the rail network and is able to receive complete trains.
There is a business center on site.
The River Port of Arles is also used for “short sea” and coastal traffic in the Mediterranean, Europe and Africa (wood and chemicals).
