| Provence is a leading region in many industrial and service sectors : |
| Chemistry |
| |
| Provence is the first chemical and petrochemical site in France: with 30% of
the crude oil refinery activity and near 50% of the chlorine production.
The major part of this production is located in the Berre-Lavera-Fos triangle,
with refineries of Shell in Berre, TotalFina in La Mède, BP in Lavéra
and Exxon in the Industrial Park of Fos.
There are also three vapocrackers: Shell, LP, Lyondell (on the zone of Fos) which
produce polymers for the units of Montell and Elenac. Dow Chemical and Cabot
France are installed on the site of Shell Berre. Are also present Air Liquide
(Vitrolles), Aluminium Pechiney (Gardanne), Elf Atochem (Fos) and many subcontractors.
Belgian logistician Kaoten Natie, already present on the unit of Basell, has
established a multi-customer distribution center in Berre.
The industrial Park of Fos:
located on more than 7000 hectares bordering on the Port of Marseilles/Fos,
it lodges several establishments of heavy industry:
• the iron and steel plant of Sollac
(30% of the French production of flat steel),
• the iron and steel plant of Ascometal,
• the unit of polyethylene of Lyondell,
• metallurgical constructions Eiffel,
• Air Products, Liquid air, Gaz de France,
• of tens of subcontractors.

| The Food-processing Industry |
| |
It is the 1st French industrial
export sector and the 2nd regional for employment.
The Bouches du Rhône county predominant figures : half of the regional
population is concerned, an industrial agroalimentary regional 47% turnover
made by 233 locally based industrial-scale manufacturers and 427 subsidiaries
of industrial producers.
This branch is characterized by:
• An important fruit and vegetable local production,
• Supplying capacity by the Marseilles's Port Autonome,
• Presence of well known companies,
• A priveliged entry to Southern of Europe markets.
Export sales totaling 7.5 billion francs,
represent 28 % of turnover. (more than the
national average)
The national and international leaders are in the following sectors: cereal
manufacturers (i.e. Panzani, RCL, ...), drinks producers (i.e. Pernod Ricard,
Orangina, Coca-Cola, Heineken, ...), sugar processors (Générale
Sucrière..), specialized processors (i.e. Haribo, Sopad, Nestlé,
Sarah Lee, Conserve Italia..).
The region also has important primary processing companies dealing with semolina
products (i.e. semoulerie de Bellevue), milling (i.e. Grands Moulins Storione),
and oil production (i.e. Oli Provence, Puget, ...). This is complemented by
a strong regional industry based on Provence gastronomy (Marius Bernard, Agis,
Calissons du Roy René, Jean Martin…). |

| Micro-electronics |
| |
Nearly 35% of the French production of micro-electronics is located on the pole
of Rousset, in Gémenos and in La Ciotat.
ST Microelectronics and Atmel exploit two ultramodern fabs, both in progress
of extension. Dupont Photomasks created a factory of masks to supply these two
fabs. Many French and international providers and subcontractors support these
activities: Jacobs-Sereke, Applied Materials, SNEF Electriflux, Méridionale
Impianti, Laporte Electronics, Gun, Air Products, and so on. The specialized
chemist Merck established a distribution center " just-in-time " for
ultrapure chemicals. Gemplus, world leader of the smart card, was created in
Provence and employs 2500 people in Gémenos and in La Ciotat.
This strong sector in Provence represents the first micrelectronics pole in France
and in Southern Europe, 35 % of the french microelctronics. It is more than 7000
jobs, and more than 60 billion FF cumulative investments. |

Here, tourism
is not a standardized industrial product. There
is a tradition of hospitality. It is one of the
natural and cultural strengths of our region.
Our countryside is just like us: natural, varied, welcoming.
In a quality environment,
the region has exceptional sites, considerable
Roman
remains and first class facilities for sports, pastimes and cultural activities.
Its
geographical location and its climate make the region a terminus for Mediterranean
cruises. And business tourism is more and more attracted by our shores.
Tourism
in Provence represents 11.7% of the world branch GIP.
It is 7.4% of the France GDP. The regional touristic consumption is about :
7.1 billion euors and 1.5 billions euros for the Bouches du Rhône county. |
|
| Human
Resources and training |
| |
With three
Universities, considered engineer and commercial
high schools, Marseilles and its area are able
to satisfy the needs of the industrial and
services
companies on all the levels of qualification.
For logistics in particular,
more than thirty formations, CAP/BEP (before
Bac professionnal
diplomas) to BTS (two years degrees) to master
degrees are available. They ensure the companies
the means of recruiting a qualified and adaptable
labour force in handling, management of warehouse,
forwarding agents, logistics engineering, etc.
The
labour force of Provence has the skills and abilities necessary to the
modern logistics jobs.
